Verification of Cleaning Chemicals

Hi Everyone!

Good day!

I was tasked to create a verification plan for the cleaning chemicals. Below are the points provided my immediate superior:

a) Identify the receiving parameters for the following:

1) Isopropyl / Ethyl alcohol (parameter that can represent that the solution is 70%)

2) Detergent

3) Quaternary Ammonium compound

4) Sanitizers (Alcohol Based)

b) Verification for effectiveness (microbiological test)

I have no problem with verification of effectiveness. We are doing %kill analysis to identify the log reduction when the chemical is applied to a culture of bacteria.

The problem is how can I determine receiving parameters for the above mentioned chemicals?

Some of my colleagues suggested pH determination but when I checked the pH of 70% and 95%alcohol pH value difference is not significant. Looking forward to your help and suggestions if there are available tools/kits/methods to verify the concentration during receiving.

Warm regards,

CPR

Are your ethanol and isopropanol solutions simply mixes of "pure" alcohol and water, and do you have anything on site that can measure density? If so, there are conversion tables readily available so this could be a reasonable approach.

Whether the same can be applied to the alcohol-based sanitizers may depend on what (if anything) is also in them, as the density will then be a function of not just alcohol content but also of the concentration and nature of the other constituents. Worth asking your supplier about this.

IIRC you can get test strips for QACs, although not something I've used so can't give specific recommendations.

The detergent may be more challening as that is potentially going to have the most complex composition, and being in spec is potentially going to be determined by several parameters.

TBH the first thing I'd do would be to get in touch with your chemical supplier in a more general sense and have a conversation with them, as many of them can offer basic test kits for routine verification for some cleaning products, so that might make your task quite a lot simpler ;)

Hi CPR,

As Post 2, most of the above should logically be directly answerable via (or as an extension of) a Product Specification which should exist if an approved supplier is (hopefully) involved ?

@pHruit,

Thank you! I am also coordinating with all the suppliers involved. I am also asking them to indicate the parameters to the COA so we can use it as basis during receiving of chemicals.

Thanks and regards,

Olive

Hi @Charles. C,

Thanks for mentioning the approved supplier and product specifications. I reviewed our system and the process that we have is only to qualify chemicals through %kill analysis. We only have the system of qualification, verification and evaluation of suppliers for the RM/PM.

I think I need to revisit and revise the procedure or create another procedure for this.

Thank you and regards,

Olive
