Potassium salt labelling

Dear all,

To reduce the sodium content in one of our products, we have been suggested "potassium salt" by a supplier.

Can this salt be labeled in the ingredient list as "potassium salt"?

According to the supplier, yes, but I am not yet fully convinced of this.

In fact, the potassium salt consist of an additive, E508, potassium chloride.

Thank you for your opinion.

(European legislation applicable)

Greetings Jens,

Potassium chloride is a naturally occuring salt that has a different extraction and processing method than sodium chloride. It can serve as a substitute for the typical salt and it isn't associated with any adverse effects under normal consumption conditions. It is highly recommended as an alternative for people with high blood pressure.

One downside is that it has a bit metallic taste and you should experiemnt around it a bit cause it may alter the organolpetic characteristics of your product.

Having said that, it also shouldn't be used without some warning for example to people who may take potassium-based diuretics.

Bottomline is that yes it can be used as an alternative but as with everything you must examine every aspect. Usually people with health issues do know what to avoid and should propably avoid it themselves, either NaCl or KCl.

Regards
