USFDA Food Labeling Date format

Could someone direct me on the date format regulation for the USA market? The below link does not really specify requirement in specific date format.

What happens if the product label does not comply with the MM/DD/YYYY format?

American consumers are going to assume you use an American date format. 

If you want to avoid the hassle, include the format on the label or write the month with letters instead of numbers.
