Do I need Net weight and PDP on gift box?
hello all,
We have a customer possible wanting to buy a gift box of snack treats from us. They were asking about the PDP and net wt.
They were not wanting anything on the front of the gift box...no PDP or Net wt. contents.
Is this allowed? I have seen a lot of holiday boxes and gift boxes that do not include the PDP or Net wt...
Does anyone have any information about this?
thanks in advance!! :)
The front of the box and the primary display may not be the same thing...
Where will people look to see what is inside the box?
If the front fully displays what is inside, the net weight should probably be in front.
If the front is just artwork, like a farm or a snowy field or something, and people have to look at the back of the box to see what's in it, that's were the net weight would go.
Most gift boxes I've got have been baskets or boxes with artwork on the front and all actual product labelling on the back or bottom.

I'm not a labeling expert, but I do know that there are regulations in the USA that require ingredient decks, allergen labeling, net weights as well as nutritional information.
AFIK, there is no requirement WHERE this information has to be on the package, just that it has to be there and in a specific format.

I suppose if it's not going on a retail shelf for the consumer, then there may be exemptions (none that I'm aware of however).
If this is not the case, it is a requirement that net weights be on the primary display per 21CFR.101.7
I've had to label gift boxes before, and if they're sold at retail, I needed both net weight and a proper principal display panel to meet labeling rules.
Yeah, I’ve seen a bunch of gift boxes, especially around the holidays, that don’t have the PDP or net weight on the front—usually it’s on the back or inside. I did something similar when I sent out snack boxes for a small party; no front labels, and people still loved them. Kind of like a www.nixplay.com that shows all the content clearly without needing extra clutter on the front—clean and simple works.

Are you selling this gift box to someone within the United States?
I think the critical thing is, what is the purpose of the gift box. If it's a box of goodies that a company plans to give out via its sales team to various vendors or customers and it's not entering into commerce, than you'd be fine to not have labeling. If it's entering into commerce and being sold in the US, you need to follow labeling guidelines.
In EITHER event, I would certainly list all allergens because even as a gift, someone should know if they're going to die from eating something.

This is incorrect. Label guides in the US are very clear on what areas of the label certain info must go.
