We manufacture food and export to Germany without IFS badge, hence I assume it is not mandatory :)

You wouldn't need a badge to sell me your wares Franco. Just give me the alcohol!

None of the Standards IFS, BRC etc. are legal requirements. The Standards are driven by the industry in an attempt to give confidence and consistency throughout the food supply chain. Unless the particular customer you want to deal with requires IFS, like Franco says it is not mandatory, although no doubt IFS Certification could provide you with greater opportunity to develop into the German market both now and in the future.

As Simon has pointed out there is no legal requirement for IFS / BRC / etc.

If your product is not a supermarket brand they may accept it but the biggest German supermarket requires all supplies to hold certification against IFS.

Supermarket branded products will always require an IFS or BRC certificate (depending on the country).
Hi Yorky,

All so true. I guess you know I am now in the thick of it - hopefully it will get done. Yes, BRC or IFS are both examples of "private" requirements if you may say, a criteria to doing business within the confine of certain industries sometimes in certain countries as well.

That's right it's not required by law, but it may be required by your customer.

Hi,

actually in Germany are a couple of traders, which are requesting IFS if you want to become listed. These are mainly discounters, but also larger "buyer" organizations.

If you are not sure about, ask you customer. They will tell you!
