Food Safety & Quality Awards

Announcing details of an annual awards programme for members of the International Food Safety & Quality Network. The awards will recognise the good practice of members in improving food safety, standards, productivity and quality within their organisations.

We believe the awards are a natural extension to the discussion forums and will further enhance best practice and learning and provide members with deserved and valuable recognition.

We have some ideas on the structure of the awards, but we would also value the input of members in developing award categories, submission criteria, winner selection, prizes, sponsors etc.

If you want to help shape the Food Safety & Quality Awards please discuss below.

Regards,
Simon

How about "Person most likely to kill an auditor" award? ( i could win that one!)

Or "Improvement to customer perception award" (the C word could win that!)

Or "Honest Trader Award"? (few supermarkets in the running there!)

Seriously, i think everyone in here deserves a pat on the back......not only for sharing information with the rest of us, but for showing we have a sense of humour and can laugh in the face of adversity. (and the EHO)

I think this is a very good idea Simon, and can i have sweetest girlie?

Always Caz.

I see the potential in an annual awards; at first web based, but who knows in the future. I hope enough members see the potential and help to get it off the ground.

Simon
I think their should be awards category wise and judgement should be done based on kind of industry and resources because these things matters for improving quality in an industry.

Can you expand your thinking with an example please Vani.

Dear Simon,
I think this is a great initiative. Why don't you create a poll for this thread? I think that this will give us the general guidelines of your idea and this way we will be all able to contribute with our replies!
Best regards,
Kelly

I agree, I think that as we are such a broad spectrum of industries, it may be prudent to separate them.

maybe
ready meals (this can be further broken down)
preserved products (pickles, sauces, jams)
meats
dairy
packaging needs to be involved too as their insight has been invaluable

Then the innovative things that have been done to improve food safety
doesn't have to be a major thing, sometimes the simplest trick is the best one.

We also have subject matters as topics, maybe do something along these lines.

We also have to be aware that legislation is different in many countries too, so how about daftest bit of legislation!
Then theres the most annoying or worthless "official body" (name and shame maybe?)

Mind you, like i said earlier, everyone who posts and shares info with us deserves an award...i know i've learnt from this site, and i've also made some lovely friends in other industries and that has been worth the world.

Hi Kelly, Great to hear from you again. At this stage I'm not sure a poll would be the best way forward. What would we ask??? I think we should generally kick around ideas for a while.

My initial thoughts were to try to keep it simple this first year. Perhaps this could be achieved by having a "Food Safety & Quality Champion" award and maybe a "Highly commended" runner up or two. The winner(s) would be selected from across any area of the food industry (including packaging) for the respective achievement made by the individual in their company or industry. Maybe a trophy, some certificates and prizes. I could contact some companies to see if they would be prepared to sponsor a prize or two. The prizes and kudos would surely be marketable. Imagine being the first "International Food Safety & Quality Champion" ever. Something to tell the grandkids about.

Obviously there would need to be fixed submission guidelines and also a panel to decide on the winner(s).

If we start off small I think we could get it off the ground. Maybe in a few years we can start to tour the world and hold the first one at the Royal Albert Hall; lot's of award categories, speakers, seminars, exhibitors and beer. I'm serious!

These are only my ideas of course. What do you think? Let's discuss some more.

Thanks for your input.

Simon
Judging by the disappointing response, I think maybe this could be another one of my cock-eyed ideas.

I'm off to Holland for a few days later this afternoon; I will think some more in the land of clogs and tulips.

Hi Simon,

I am pleased that you take off for Holland for a few days a country much more than the land of clogs and tulips, but you can see for yourself.
Regarding your idea of an annual awards programme for members of the International Food Safety & Quality Network I noticed that most reactions are positive. In itself I like award programs but, yes here comes the but.
Forums like this can flourish because everybody can post messages regardless of status, education, social status, award winner, etc.
Every contribution is regarded equal important and you should judge contributions on merits and than it becomes valuable to you or not.
This requires brainwork because you have to judge the contribution on merits.
You cannot relax and sail away on the knowledge of an author with some status.
I do not see awards as a natural extension to the discussion forum.
I have an other idea, start a virtual company in cyber world that is run by participants of this forum.
With all the docs worked out in Wiki’s regarding production targets, marketing strategies, purchase policies, etc. etc.

Have a nice day, Okido

Apologies if my comments offended you Okido. I didn't mean to. I have been to Holland a number of times and I enjoy the land, people and culture very much. This time I was at Apeldoorn.

I understand your point about everyone's opinion and contributions being valuable. Like I said I need to think some more about an awards program. I value your input Okido.

Simon
