Can anybody tell me how safe is the edible silver , normally used as decoration for Indian sweets like Rasmalai etc?

Today i found one of our supplies and found this silver was supplied in a unhygienic way covered in the papers of yellow pages!!!!!

Can some body tell me from where i can source a better quality edible silver?

Dear Ajmal,

Fascinating post and welcome to the forum.

Regret no idea of alternative sources but regarding edibility, saw this perhaps related recent item -

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers the metallic-finish dragées to be inedible. Early in the 20th century, the silver finish may have contained mercury (it does not now). The sale of these dragées was banned for some time. Although the metallic-finish dragées can be purchased in 49 U.S. states, in California, they are no longer sold due to a 2003 lawsuit against several sellers. Now, these dragées are sold with a notice that they are for decorative purposes only. However in other countries (including the United Kingdom) they are classed as food items

Dear Ajmal,
Pure silver is toxic in abnormal quantities. I am not sure about the limit. It can react with the acids in stomach, but i think human body can excrete silver in metallic form without much damage.

Food grade silver is availbale in india and the PFA act requires 99.9 % purity. Ine of the reseraches has shown that these silverfoils are grossly contaminated ( adultrated) with other harmful metals.
What you might be using might not be silver at all.

Please have a check on the qulaity of metal to ensure safety.

Regaqrds,

Bobby
