Does anyone know about the history of Codex Alimentarius for example what the name means, why it was developed, why they created the food hygiene code, when and where? What does CA do today and is the food hygiene / HACCP code still the defacto model?
Thanks,
Simon

Dear simon:
codex alimentarius is:

2. to ensure fair practices in the food trade .
3.to coordinate all work regarding food standards.
4.to determinate the priorities
5.to initiat the preparation os standards
6.to publish the standards
FAO in 1961 and WHO 1963 passed resolution to establish the codex alimentarius commission ,
codex also responsible for hoint FAO/WHO food standard program .
it designed to ensurec international acceptance in terms of quality and economic interest of consumer and, ensure fair trade practics.
standards based on sientific principles such as haccp.
Dear Simon,
Partial answer.
Starting from the Assyrians -

And highlighting some of the objections to its power -

As far as HACCP goes, the Americans got their first I think, sort of, or maybe not if you start from FMEA. One difference concerns the handling of validation / verification. No doubt there are others. Also I would guess that USA still prefers a basically prescriptive approach whereas Codex has moved away from this. (the older Codex presentations are more "borrowable" for generic-type implementation to random processes, a fact that Codex apparently didn't like, hence the switch)

Thanks for the history lesson guys. Am I right to say that NASA were the first to develop and coin the term HACCP for ensuring safety of food for astronauts during space missions??? And what existed beforehand???
Yes Simon you are right in saying that NASA first developed HACCP.
Dear Charles,
Thanks for the link to origins of Codex Alimentarius & milestone to the evolution of food standards.

Dear Simon,
Not sure how many different requests so far ? Itemise perhaps
For overview of history of principles of HACCP/pre-HACCP can try -
http://www.icd-onlin...urseshaccp.html
(module 1, lecture3) (Interesting website for HACCP and various things).
added sorry, timeline only goes to 1998, back to google or anybody ??
For understanding Codex can try their 12MB booklet, at
http://www.who.int/f...o/en/index.html
(strangely their personal timeline detail seems to stop around 1963 although other people's comments go to 2004 )
There is a lot on growth of BRC etc in a link in another recent ISO thread here, can dig if that was a 3rd query.
Don't forget Santa Google
