Mock Recalls In Small Meat Industry

I would like any information on covering all basis needed in conducting a mock recall. I am familiar with process and ideas, however would like new ideas. Recalls can become repetitive.

I do three types of traceability audit and schedule them for every 3 months (so you cover all aspects within a quarter) but in practice we probably do them more often.

Forwards: Start with an ingredient / packaging material and work out what it went into and account for all of the stock used.

Backwards: Start with a finished pack and work out what went into it.

Recall: Work out how much was made of a given batch, work out where it went to and see if you can account for all of the product made.

Is this valid? Using your non conformities to test your recall program?
I once heard from an auditor that it would be good to actually contact clients and change the product, just to see how much time it would really take us to pick up all the product. Just imagine the expense of a mock recall!!! Not to mention having to explain all this to the customer (like Esther said).

IMO first we have to set the objectives like 'Identify 100% of contaminated products within 2 hours'.

then tirgger the mock recall by identifying one batch of items as contamineted

frind the traceability of the batches by the responsible persons

including
raw materials used & Supplier
Production reports
Batch inspection reports
Key samples
affected batches inside the factory
customer details where affected batches sent
matter to be given to press for advt.
draft communication to regulatory authorties
etc...

then all the resposible persons to meet and declare it as a mock recall by the incharge

identify the areas where improvements can be made or difficulties faced

achievement of the objectives set

then document and file all these details properly

That's a good point. Recall audits do need to be time bound. I write down the time at the start of the audit and at the end so I can see how easy it was.
