Hello,

New on this forum, I would like to have your opinion about PRPs handling
ISO 22000 make a distinction between PRP and operational PRP, could you explain clearly this distinction
I have difficulties with theses two definitions and will be pleased if someone could give me a clear unambiguous answer!

Hi Exaris,

Welcome to the forum.

If you refer to the earlier DISO 22000, there is a decision tree for defining the two types of PRPs.

IMO, I read the interpretation as, if it DIRECTLY affects the monitoring or control of identified hazards or where validation is required, it should be an Operational PRP.

PRP programs are those involving strictly to infrastructures and maintenance which have no direct relationship to the control or monitoring of the identified hazards BUT may still have an effect to the end product safety if it is not part of the food safety program.

That is my opinion. I hope some one can verify it as well.

Hi Charles,

I agree with you. Slight different wording but this my version

The PRP's are not selected for the purpose of controlling a specific identified hazard, but for the purpose of maintaining a general hygienic production, processing and handling environment and may still have an effect on the end product safety if not included in the food safety system.

Operational pre requisites are those that are in place to directly manage or control measures that the hazard analysis has identified as necessary to control to acceptable levels and are not otherwise management by the HACCP plan.

In a recent audit where no HACCP plan was required as there were no CCP's the main document for controlling food safety lay in the Operational Pre requsite Plan.
