SQF 13.3.2 Handwashing - Sink Location

Hello Everyone,

We sure could use some help on this one. We are a food packaging printer working on SQF level 1 - 13.3.2.1 states" Hand wash basins shall be provided adjacent to all personnel access points...."

We are installing one handwashing sink outside the lunchroom as empoyees enter the manufacturing area from break. Our other employee access area where the time clock is does not have a suitable drain for a handwashing sink. Plumbers have told us that we would have to install a sump pump and route drain plumbing through walls etc. - huge expense.

We do have a suitable drain for a sink near the area, about 20 steps once you enter the building. We would mark the floor as the only walkway to the sink and manufacturing area (they would be walking by 3 plate mounting machines near the area but not through the area), also put the time clock there to ensure that the employees go to that area when they come in.

Can anyone provide any guidance for us on this?

It would be appreciated

You could look into the placement of sanitary hand wipe stations for your time clock area and any other areas not suitable for a hand wash station. Also, you think about employee entrance/exit flow design. Have the entrance from lunch room be the only marked entrance.

Thanks for the respose - We had the same thought about the lunchroom being the only entrance - The lunchroom is off the main office and the door to the lunchroom from the office get's locked at night - I like the sanitary wipe station idea!

Put in a portable hand washing station. These are mobile roll in type units that plug into the wall - grey water will need to be dumped. I've seen them in several facilities, they work well in situations such as this where the expense of running lines is cost prohibitive.
