Cheese Marking Crayon/Marker
Hey all,
I work in the QA department for a large cheese manufacturing company. We are looking for potential suppliers for cheese marking utensils (crayons, markers, etc.) that are food safe and that work well on cheese products that will end up going through a brine system. The only thing we're able to find at this time are meat markers and the issue we have with the supplying company is that they will not provide us with any documentation other than a MSDS. We are SQF level 3 certified and require more documentation than just that.
Does anyone have any ideas/suppliers that they use and could share with me? Thanks for the help!

NSF certified permanent ink marker (registration no. 140065) for nonfood compounds category R1
.
I'm no expert with US classifications but R1 apparently means - "Coatings for use on direct food contact surfaces", ie not on the food itself

The information provided seems encouraging to me and might well satisfy an auditor. However I also noted no mention of terms like "food-safe", "food-grade", etc. It is clearly of interest to know the scientific meaning / application / relevance of the statuses which are mentioned.

I work for BST Detectable Products, we manufacture a metal detectable meat marker that is also used in extensively the dairy industry for marking cheese. I'm unsure if you have already approached our company or not?
If you could let me know exactly what the criteria are for SQF level 3 I can certainly try and obtain relevant documentation for you.

I noticed one interesting comment in the specification -
Our ink only contains ingredients suitable for human consumption.
Is it possible to elaborate a little more ?

I missed the previous link, I can confirm the product is the same and is being offered by our distribution partners in Australia / New Zealand. The quote "Our ink only contains ingredients suitable for human consumption" is taken directly from the manufacturers of the ink. I shall contact them directly for documentation in support of this claim and report on this topic.

So far, the most frequent use of edible "inks" seems to be in the cake-making/decorating area although the type of product you are referring is also active in USA for meat / cheese. But as to the typical ingredients ? :smile:

We use edible ink to print company logos onto the tops of truffles - I'll see if I can get a brand name for you
