Electronic cigarettes in the canteen yes or no?

Hi everyone

I suspect that this topic has been discussed many times, but I would appreciate your views on staff smoking electronic cigarettes in the canteen?

In our opinion we would like to encourage our staff to give up smoking however the E cigs can be offensive to people who do not smoke.

Any input would be great

Thanks  :spoton:

I say yes. But you'll see most people didn't agree.

That being said the location I worked at had a smoking policy of in your car or off the property at the time and to incentivize people not smoking they allowed people who used vaporizers or e-cigarettes to use them on the property outside of their car.

At our company same rules apply to vaping that applies to cigerettes.

At my third company and thus far all polices say they are the same as a regular tobacco product, so wherever your designated area is.

smoking and vapeing are two different things and saying "we have a smoking policy we are covered" is like saying that your X food plant is dirty because another one is or you make flour when you really make yogurt.

Very interested to see what the consensus is on this one! Great question!

But like smoking, vaping has an exhaust that can affect others in the area.  I've heard from friends that go to clubs that allow vaping, that they come home with a smell and a stickiness to their clothes.  Some have a sensitivity to the chemicals in vaping.

I would disagree with the analogy, to me it is more like oranges, are we talking navel or mandarin?

I would agree with Setanta on this one.  Which is why we treat it like smoking.  It may not be tobacco, but it does emit fumes.

Well I'm not going to get back into the entire argument again but the fact remains that the "fumes" were studied and it was shown there was no health risk associated. That was attached to the other conversation.

If effects other? How?  The smell?  I can smell BO all day indoor anywhere and I can't ban them for not knowing how to properly shower.

I love when people say "You blow bacteria everywhere".  People are always exhaling and if bacteria is along for the ride it's going to go with your breath just as much anything else.  Bacteria doesn't need vapor to ride on.

I am going to agree to disagree with everyone here mainly because of the following reasons:

A) I've actually read a lot of studies that go along with vaping and nearly all of them show that it is safe for everyone else.  If it's not safe for me that's my decision to use it.  It can't ever be worse than smoking.

B) All of the studies that say it's at all harmful were performed when equipment was used incorrectly (like the recent one that had them burning the coil with no liquid on a high power level for an extended period of time)

C) The arguments that it smells is ludicrous as I stated above.  I have to smell BO, Bad Breath, and disgusting perfume/cologne every time I go to a public location.  You can deal with the smell of Strawberry and Black Cherry as well.

D) I personally, and very honestly, don't care what anyone else's opinion is. I will abide by laws that I think are ridiculous and stupid because that's what law abiding citizens do.  This is especially true when doctors are coming out in droves trying to stop governments around the 1st world because the first product that has actually taken millions of people off of cigarettes, which are an actual carcinogen not a theoretical one, in the span of approximately 5 years few of whom relapse.  I know as well no matter what I say or show none of you who are anti-vape will agree with me either.  And with that:

And this is the point of a conversation where I don't return to it.  Yes this is personal for me.  Yes I take offense to ignorance on the subject.  Yes I am unrepentant.

Please feel free to converse about them more.  I have answered the original poster's question with a thread from the past and my duty as an IFSQN citizen is done.

:doctor:

But businesses (like ours) do forbide strong cologne and we have had HR meetings with people with bad breath, and BO. And if someone leaves a business feeling like a tacky residue is on them and they don't return to the business because of that, businesses have the right to say No to Vaping.

Your not caring about our opinion is noted.

EDITED to add smiley faces, cause I'm not upset or anything

:shades:  :cheezy:  :spoton:  :giggle:

Deep breaths everyone.  Go to your happy place. It's a discussion and with different views, and not intended personally.

As a business we treat it like smoking.  We also treat BO and strong cologne as GMP issue and have counseled staff on this issue and even sent them home.  Still smells happen.

While I don't smoke or vape, as far as the science goes, I personally will take a wait and see approach.  There are many decades of research on various topics which we now consider dubious.  Remember the ads for more doctors smoke brand, (fill in name here) or giving your baby soda will make them healthier, happier and more popular.  Now they want to limit how much we can buy.  By your reaction, I would suspect your getting "bugged" a lot about it.  While it may be upsetting, take it as people's concern for your health.

Now take another deep breath........

I say no. Mr Tesco won't differentiate between a e Cigarette and a real one!

Lol and I think we did this discussion a while back & Mr I had the same opinion then. But I still love him!!

Thank you everybody for your input. After the discussion it seems like the majority are against it. May be we should just have designated areas for smokers, vapors and none smokers and keep everybody happy!!

 and keep everybody happy!!

That would be the hard part.  :roflmao:

Electronic Cigarettes have less cancer risks than regular cigarettes.

Anyone can purchase nicotine to put into any e-cigarette no matter what it originally came with.  And flavorings that could become aerosolized.

Nicotine is a neurotoxin and a neurostimulant that is addictive.

You can put enough nicotine into an e-cigarette so that nicotine escapes.

Nicotine would adulterate food.  So could the flavorings.

Regulating what people put into the e-cigarettes would be impossible.

Therefore, we treat e-cigarettes the same as cigarettes, because it protects the food the best, which is the bottom line.

No.  The person who suggested this to you didn't think you'd actually  go for it.

There are a lot of problems with including the idea that you don't know what oil thry're smoking.  It's not always tobacco, sometimes it's whacky tobaccy.

And I say this as a food manufacturing employee who smokes cigarettes, has flavored ecigs, and smokes some other stuff too.

We are tobacco free, and say no e-cigs either, FDA has not approved of them, that's what we are using for justification.

And I say this as a food manufacturing employee who smokes cigarettes, has flavored ecigs, and smokes some other stuff too.
