Internal Audit 3.4 BRC v. 7

Hello everyone,

I hope someone can help!

I have a small problem. I must do internal audit in my new company.
I would like to ask for a checklist for BRC v.7

Does anyone have and provide me with a checklist ?

The best checklist is the standard itself.

Put it into excel and do a bit of organising to add the columns and information you need.

Then risk assess the requirements and determine the frequency you will audit each section / clauses.

And put it into a schedule.

Use that for internal audits and you will always be preparing and checking compliance against the standard...then you will be prepared when you come to the 3rd party certification audit.  It will also help you to understand the standard more deeply also.

Items relating to factory standards and personal hygiene you would want to do monthly.

Whilst the BRC self-assessment tool will help, internal audits should cover your food safety & quality management system, not just the requirements of the BRC standard.

Just a note of warning as per my previous post your internal audit schedule should cover your food safety & quality management system and you should not just use the self assessment tool. From BRC:

This tool is designed to help you assess your operation against the requirements of the Standard and help prepare you for your certification audit.
The checklist covers each of the requirements of the Standard and may be used to check your site’s compliance with each of these requirements.  The checklist also allows you to add comments or identify areas of improvement in the empty boxes provided at the end of each section.
While we hope that this tool is useful in helping you prepare for your audit it should not be considered as evidence of an internal audit and will not be accepted by auditors during an audit.

My company have BRC and IFS 6 , but I'm new to the company and I don't have previous checklists .
I would like to make good checklist but really I don't know how!

Earlier internal audits and checklists have a person who worked in my company .

We usually perform internal audits to our clients, and we use requirements from BRC included in an Excel sheet, with columns for evidences and desviations.. Actually, that's a similar approach to what the CB will use.

By the way, we have had some troubles performing  internal audits anual plan. We perfomed internal audis against BRC v. 6 during 2 consecutive days, but you can do that with the new version. You should audit differents parts of the standard along the year.

This is the same as the BRC self assessment template and only covers the first section of the standard.

You have seen the example I have posted which can be developed from your procedures, you will also need to check current versions of documents are available and relevant records are being completed correctly and personnel carrying out the tasks are trained.

From BRC Guidance:

The most common way of completing an internal audit is by taking documented procedures and work instructions and comparing them with actual working practices and records.

I deduce that all records of previous, seemingly successful, audits by BRC/IFS are essentially non-existent. Hard to believe but obviously not impossible.

i would advise you to asap contact the relevant auditors and request copies of exchanges of information between yr Company and themselves. One specific reason is that subsequent auditors will highly likely utilise such information on future visits.

I also deduce you are unfamiliar with the requirements attached to performing internal audits. I sympathise since i initially found myself in the same position. I laboriously studied published examples of similar activities performed for ISO 9001 and used those principles to construct/modify a list similar to the self-assessment tool already referenced in this thread. You can be assured that there is nothing particularly revolutionary in the basic BRC auditorial approach even though they sometimes exhibit considerable talent in suggesting otherwise. :smile:

In retrospect, it would have been far, far easier, finances permitting, to get a little professional help.

Ideally, an internal audit is an evolutionary document which is another way of saying it should be risk-based (and therefore, at least partially, specific to yr own process).

I can see that I have a big problem :(

I can make a checklist where they will be my questions to the BRC standard ?

E.g:
Clause 1.1
Does the company have the current quality policy ?

Do I have to create questions to a specific production department ?
