Hi

Your policies, procedures and records should cover YOUR requirements under HACCP and also cover any requirements required set out by customers or third parties (I.e. BRC).

Your internal audits should be reviewing your OWN policies, procedures and records and then if these are correct will in turn cover all other requirements and not just BRC.

If you read section 3.4 (BRC) the Statement of Intent. This is what BRC requires you to complete i.e. it must demonstrate the verifies the effective application of the food safety plan and the implementation of the requirements of the Global standard. This means:

That you should be reviewing all your supporting QMS including HACCP (incl: Pre-requisites) etc

Hi All;

How do the internal audits planned for the BRC

best regards

I am new to this forum.

We are a small family-owned company and just lke what most QA's or HACCP coordinators in small companies experience, I am having a problem of who should be conducting the internal auditing. I developed the program in conjunction with a consultant. Can I do the internal auditing or should soemone form the outside do it?

Thanks,

Paul

Dear Paul;

The internal auditors have to be the ones who are trained and have a competency especially for food safety/haccp/gmp audits. For instance ; if you are not specialised and/or have an experiment in ccps, operational prerequisite programmes etc ; you can not perform their internal audit. Therefore; for each process and/or each department the assigned internal auditor has to prove that he/she has the ability/information/competency/enough experience to do it.

So, now you have to clearfy how closed you are in the areas that expected to be audited.

Best Regards

Aegean

It depends also on the size of your organization and how many people are involved. I would plan to audit section one last which would give senior management time to review the previous years objectives and plan any capital spending which may be affected or needed by results from the internal audits of the rest of the sections. For the auditing the rest of the sections you should schedule each section every 2 to 4 weeks, again which depends on the size of the facility and number of people involved.

This brings up an interesting point. What is the preferred way to do an internal audit?
I audit programs, procedures, etc., that are in place to meet the requirements of the various clauses. Those clauses that do not specifically require a "documented procedure" are audited separately. In any case, all clauses get audited.
So I guess the question is:
1) Audit a section and have a matrix that includes all programs, procedures, etc., that need to be audited to ensure compliance. Or,
2) Audit existing programs, procedures, etc., that cross reference to specific clauses and then audit clauses that do not require a documented program, procedure, etc.?

Any preferences out there?

Just to add some more information, I audit Fundamentals twice per year, which is why I go with the program, procedure route, rather than the section route.

One thing to note though with BRC you have to be independent from what you are auditing. In other words don't Audit a manual/procedure or programme you manage and wrote. This can be difficult in small businesses.

BRC Version 6:

Section 3.4.2 states - Internal audits shall be carried out by appropriately trained competent auditors, who are independent from the audited department.
