Does anyone have any information about desiccant packets?
Does anyone have any information about desiccant packets? We do not use them in our facility, although I know you find them in pill bottles and beef jerky. This morning we received a shipment of popcorn that had packets in the same bag as the product. I thought they ruled those out for safety reasons a little while back. Are they approved by the FDA?
Food grade desiccants and oxygen absorbers are permitted, there are several GRAS notices covering silica gel desiccants, typically packaged in Tyvek or some other food contact packaging to separate the desiccant from the product. Is your concern that the desiccant came in contact with the product because the packaging was torn? What does the packet you found look like or say?

if the desiccant comes in contact with the product, as long as the silica gel is food grade, as manufacturers would we be covered?
thank you,
IT depends on the Gel you purchased. Get the ingredients and consult with the manufacturer. FDA has several gras notices for silica but they may contain non-gras ingredents.
A manufacturer of gel packs has a good overview here: https://www.silicagelpackets.ca/faqs/
Can anyone point directly to the FDA regulation and/or GRAS notices on the dessicant pouches used in FOOD products?
Thanks in advance!
