Private label: who's approval number?

Hi,

 

My company is thinking of buying products from another manufacturer and sell it under our own brand name, so private label production.

 

I am not really sure now what should be on the label: does it have to be the approval number of the manufacturer or can they use our own label including our approval number?

I read all the legislation regarding labelling and production of this product, but I cannot find exactly what to do in this case, I haven't got experience enough in private labelling to be sure about this.

It seems logical that the number is used from the plant where it is produced, but then it wouldn't be so private anymore   :cool:

It would help to know where in the world you're posting from.  As far as I know, the UK / EU, the "health mark" or "approval number" for meat, fish and dairy would be where the last major change took place.  So for example, if you were producing cheese in Slovakia, importing it to the UK, unwrapping, cutting and packing, then it's the UK health mark which would go on the label.  If they're sending it to you fully packed, it should have their health mark on it.

Oh yes ofcourse, we are in Europe and it concerns a meat derived product. We are a producer ourselves but we are not going to process this product any further, so they are sending it fully packed indeed. 

So this would mean our label, but their approval number I suppose  :smile:

Yes, this would be the last processor's mark but the rest of the labelling (including contact information etc) can be yours - no different to e.g. supermarket own brand products where it's the retailers' details on the label, but the approval number is still specific to the last processing point for those food types that require such things.
