Where do you store your wooden pallets?
Hi all! Didn't know under where to post this topic, but I guess this ones okay.
I would like to know where everyone stores their pallets? We use wooden pallets and store them outside. We also did that in a previous company I worked at. Some managers are against it because they may get dirty and contaminated from outside but there isn't really a designated place indoors to store them either (limited space). How and where does everyone store them? Is there a federal requirement for pallet storage? Would love to see what everyone is doing.
My previous company we stored them outside. We brought enough in for the day, inspected them before use (documented), and never had an issue. However, I generally do not like storing pallets outside...rats love them, ants get on them (and other pests), and the weather. Before I left we were looking to have a canopy built over the pallets so they could at least be kept out of rain, not sure if that was ever done as it was quite expensive.
If you do store outside make sure it is away from your trash / dumpster and any other area that attract pests and have a documented pallet inspection program prior to using.

Yes I agree with having them under a canopy, I proposed that idea it makes the best sense I guess? We're in Florida so you can say we have a lot of pests and rain. Or possibly just like you mentioned have a documented pallet inspection form. Thanks!
Clean pallets are stored in a trailer that has pest control services in place. We have a documented pallet program. Pallets are never exposed to the elements.
We store our inside an empty extra trailer. It is covered by our Pest Control program ( bait stations etc) If it helps our supplier "loans" us the trailer. We load broken pallets back onto it, and they drop a new trailer and pick that one up at the same time.
Ours are stored outside in a covered area. We originally built a three sided shed with a drainage trough, but the Alabama humidity caused mold issues, so we removed the back wall (corrugated aluminum) leaving only the two sides and roof covered. they are protected from the elements, humidity doesn't build up, and our pest management program includes that area. No major issues.
We bring pallets inside daily, where they are inspected, and inspections are recorded, including humidity (wet wood data) so we know and can prove the effectiveness of our program.
We are AIB inspected and ISO9001 Registered and have not had any findings related to pallet storage.

I will need to assess that shed from a cost perspective. But its definitely the best idea. But wow! your pallets and pallet area look really great! :gleam:

Hi,
we are a biscuit company. We do have all pallet receiving and storage program. Storage is in an area with pest control. For hygenic area we remove wodden pallets (if raw materials are not received on plastic pallets) and exchange them by aluminium pallets (for internal use only). For finished products we use special pallets (which have to be change in the logistic center to EUR or EUR-pallets directly if the distance to unpacked product is sufficient.
