Reusable Hairnets

Hello all, I'm looking into environmentally friendly solutions for PPE in the food production area. Knowing how many hairnets staff can get through in a day, is there any reason why we can't use reusable hairnets providing they are laundered correctly? Many thanks in advance. Ry

Yes. It is acceptable if only followed proper washing/cleaning steps.

OMG I did not even know these existed

Yes, I visited a few plants in South America that used caps similar to the one in the photo.  A lady at the one facility made them- and made some pretty good side money selling them to the plants!  The plants were all BRC and IFS certified and had laundry procedures for the caps.

Hi All,

Unfortunately the laundry of these caps costs around 10x more than disposable hairnets so we're going to stick with those for now.

Thanks for your input though.

Cheers, Ry

I am new to my job, and getting a lot of push back when I try to enforce hairnet usage. Would you mind posting the link to buy those reusable ones?

They would be an expensive option and I'm not sure how long they'd last but I'd be keen to hear how you get on with them!

We are doing the same at our Bakery. We are a certified B-Corp and thus need to think more ecologically we put a LOT of hair nets into the waste stream and are trying to source some washable hairnets. we need them to be breathable because of the heat from the ovens. I have found these but they are in Belgium and shipping is going to be expensive.

Has anyone had any luck with reusable hairnets? I'm going to take a look at using these, from Detectamet. Allegedly the Super Fine Mesh ones are washable and reusable. https://detectamet.c...e-hairnets.html

I just worry about hair cross-contamination, as in if a whole load of these were put in the laundry, with my white coats, would they not then runt he risk of putting hair ont he coats?! Or would I need a separate laundry stream for them?

Our main worry about reusable hairnets is the fact that both sides of the hairnet look the same so when someone takes off their hairnet to go on break and then comes back to put it on, they might put it on inside out, unless they are super careful about folding up their hairnet or hanging it in a certain way.

But I really like the idea of these washable ones. If we had enough washable ones, they could toss the hairnet into the wash and grab a clean one.

Came across this article a while back. This company provides boxes for PPE/GMP disposal and they recycle those materials. Might be the more cost-effective option!

I dont know how effective reusable hairnets would be. How often would you require to wash? Would washing remove all the hairs left behind in the hair net? Can they be easily damaged (larger holes, threads, etc.)
