No backup SQF Practitioner
A company I'm consulting for does not have a backup practitioner and due to head count and current staff workload doesn't seem to be motivated to train a backup.
This would obviously be marked a non-conformance during an audit, though I'm not sure if it would be considered a minor or major. I'm leaning towards a potential major, wanted to see if anyone else has been in a similar situation?
Minor to maybe major.
Make the President the back-up, or so other higher up.
It could become a major when an Auditor walks in and the regular SQFP is off and there is NO backup to cover - that will be a big oops.
Very difficult to tell an Auditor, sorry but the key person is out today and there is no backup - so please come back another day, that happened to me once - it did not go over too well for the facility that day.
Hi NorCalNate,
For the SQF Food Safety Code Section 2.1.1 Management Responsibility is Mandatory:
2.1.1.4 Senior site management shall designate a primary and substitute SQF practitioner …..
Having no Substitute SQF Practitioner is highly likely to be major non-conformance. As Glenn has indicated, it would be better to designate an employee that wasn’t fully qualified than not have one at all.
Kind regards,
Tony
Yeah, gotta have a backup. You can get a bunch of NC's with an incompetent backup, but with no backup you will really be in trouble.
We are a very small place as well, but I have two people I think I could stick in there and they would do pretty good if I wasn't able. Certainly not ideal, but they are a backup after all....
I went through similar this year when my assistant left the company. Ended up making the VP (family ownership) my back-up until I can get training scheduled for my new tech. When looking through the code, among other requirements, the substitute 2.1.1.5 iii. Have completed a HACCP training course; What's interesting about this one, is it's not explicitly required to be the 2 day HACCP that 2.1 Training (optional)... SQF practitioners are required to successfully complete HACCP training that is a minimum two-day duration and assessed lists.
There are some shorter HACCP courses that might fit the bill for the backup, but they should still hit all of the points required in 2.1.1.5; it shouldn't merely be a token title.

Yeah, we require a HACCP cert for the entire HACCP team... multiple pcqi's here as well.
