20 Keys
Started by BVRC, Jul 14 2004 07:05 AM
This is my first post to the forum.
We have been investigating the implementation of the 20 Keys buniess improvemnt model. I always read about many different system improvement techniques and tool but 20 Keys is never amongst them.
Do you know where information can be obtained of real successes of this model?
Thanks lots
Bennii

The 20 Keys business improvement model is derived from a book written by Iwao Kobayashi '20 Keys to Workplace Improvement (Manufacturing & Production)'. I've not read the book so cannot comment but it does get very good reviews on Amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.co...730245?v=glance
On a search of google I came across a PowerPoint presentation which provides an overview of the 20 keys model:

Hopefully other members will have some practical experience to share.
By the way welcome to the forums Bennii.

Simon

Here's an image that may be helfull to the group discussion.
My view FWIW: The 20 keys are aligned directly to the Kaizen concepts and theories.

Thanks Wallace. On my screen I couldn't view the image too well so I've reattached it as a PDF.
Have you read the book or do you have experience of the 20 keys model?

I haven't read the book Simon, No time right now yet, I would like to have a look through it.Have you read the book or do you have experience of the 20 keys model?
A lot of the tools, techniques and theories that have come from the East (Mainly Japan) have come from the Kaizen type of philosophy. IMO, FWIW, I firmly believe, the person who studies and practices the tools techniques and philosphy of Kaizen would be able to merly overview the so called 20 steps to get a good handle on it.
At my Ford location (Canada) we tend to use a mosaic of tools and techniques that, make up the Ford Production System (FPS).
FPS continually uses benchmarks from many other tools, techniques and philosophies regarding CI.
The very nature of process improvement enforces a continual approach to CI that is discontinuous rather that continuous (Semantics again?). I just agree with the graduated approach to CI rather than the, continuos upward slope of continuous.
We should use a CI tool, measure the effectiveness, plan the next process and then move onwards.
The western process managers tend to look at improvement processes from the East as, some kind of panacea for the ills of the western style of Management by objectives and, I'm afraid we in the west tend to either, overdo the application or miss the intentions of these tools altogether.
Wallace.
I suppose when you look at the 20 keys model it's just the usual suspects in different wrapping paper. I acknowledge the model will likely have more substance to it. However, at some point you have to open the box, get stuck in and be prepared to stay stuck in for the long term, perhaps as long as 5 - 10 years.
We all know there are no quick fixes in sustained business improvement.

Thank you for all ypur contributions. We have obtained the inormation on the 20 keys from a colleagues who have been through an implemenation before. We started some training modules that cover the goal of "Eneergizing the workplace". i was involved with Rationalizing the system/Goal alignment. It is actually quite easy and simple to implement, one just has to be aware o f not making it overwhelmingly complicated as I gather the punchline of it is that personnel goes through the different levels themselves with coaching from management instead of leadership!
Thanks again
