Do flies hibernate?
Started by Simon, Dec 03 2007 10:09 AM
Hello all, I went in the loft yesterday to retrieve the Christmas decorations. Whilst up there my son shouted up that two or three flies had escaped to the house. I started to look around the loft with my torch and noticed the odd fly sitting still. On some tiles there were clusters of perhaps 10-20 flies. I sucked them up with my Dyson, but wondered are they hibernating? I always thought flies died off in winter. By the way our house is old and does not have felt under the tiles.
Just curious.
Thanks,
Simon

Hi Simon,
Flies do hibernate as I have seen it few times especially during the winter. The type called as cluster flies are seen in warm areas of the house especially in crevice or holes which are the common spots for hiding.

J

Thank you Jean. I'm going to venture into the loft again this coming weekend. I only went into half of it, I need to check the other half, but must crawl through a small hole. I'm 17 stone (110 kg's).Hi Simon,

I'm determined to get the flies whilst they are docile. Oh it's paypack time for the summer buggin.

Simon

Thanks for the link EuGeNe, and thanks for introducing me to Project Gutenberg; I'm going to lose myself for a few hours in their archive.
