SEOUL - A SOUTH Korean food company issued a public apology on Tuesday after a suspected rat's head was found in a bag of shrimp crackers.
Nong Shim, South Korea's largest processed food maker, said it has stopped producing the snack pending an investigation and is recalling it from shops across the country.
'All the responsibility rests with us, Nong Shim,' the company said in a statement.
'From the bottom of our heart, we apologise to clients who have been supporting us for the past 40 years.'
The Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) said in a statement on Monday that a furry item found in a bag of shrimp crackers was 'suspected to be the head of a rat.'
It said the offending item was thought to have been accidentally introduced at Nong Shim's plant in China's eastern city of Qingdao.
The administration said its officials had inspected Nong Shim's local plant in the southeastern city of Busan and believe the item was unlikely to have been introduced there. 'KFDA will carry out an inspection of the China plant late this month,' Lee Jae Rin, a deputy director, told reporters.

Now I'm no genius, but I believe a rats head usually comes with a rats body. So the question is who's got the big furry bit?The Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) said in a statement on Monday that a furry item found in a bag of shrimp crackers was 'suspected to be the head of a rat.'
No seriously, may not be in this case, but this could easily be a fake, so how to protect ourselves? A robust pest control system?
