The meaning of “BGA Approval”

Please can somebody confirm exactly what 'BGA approval' means? It is on a specification I have for direct food contact packaging material. My guess is that BGA approval is the German equivalent of USFDA approval. If so is BGA covered/superseded by EU Legislation?

Hoping someone can help me out.

Thanks,
Simon

BGA should be the acronym of Bundesgesundheitsamt.
I would translate it into Federal Bureau of Health in Germany.

Don't know exactly, IMHO the item should comply with EU Pharmacopeia.

The correct term is now BfR - Federal Institute for Risk Assessment.

BfR - Federal Institute of Risk Assessment

We use adhesives which are BfR approved for direct and indrect contact with food.

It is taking some suppliers quite a while to update their specification sheets.

Dunaskin.
Thanks guys, I think if a food packaging product is meant for sale in Europe then the applicable EC legislation should be met and quoted on the specification - neither BGA or BfR or any other country specific legislation is necessary.

Thanks for your input.

Simon
