Hand Wash Basins

SQF standards states that hand wash basins shall be provided adjacent to all personnel access points. This does not have any specs to how close the basins should be. Our facility has basins a few feet from the doors.. or do we need to have the stations located right next to the doors? Also, will hand sanitizer be sufficient? We are low risk as we are in the food packaging industry.

SQF doesn't specify an actual distance  You should be fine so long as that distance from the door is reasonable (i.e. can you get to the handwashing station quickly once you enter).  BRC might specify a distance, though I would need to double check.

Hand sanitizer alone is not sufficient, as it does not remove soil from one's hands.  Traditional handwashing (aka scrubbing one's hands with soap under hot water for 20 seconds) is the best way to remove soils from the hands as well as drastically reduce microbial counts.  That isn't to say that you can't or shouldn't use sanitizer.  It's great for killing microbes...on hands that have already been washed.  If you want to use sanitizer, use it after hands have been washed
