Hairnet v.s Balaclava Hoods

Hello

We are a seafood processing plant RTE.

I'm thinking about changing my regular hairnets to Balaclava hoods.

I had n-c on my last BRC audit because 2 ladies had some hair sticking out of the net.

We have posters; rules that the hairnets shall be place first before the lab coat ect...

We do sometimes found hair in our product also. But I never had a customer complaint.

The question is how do I convince my staff to wear the balaclava??

Any suggesting would be helpful.

Thanks

I don't think you need to convince. Rules are rules.

If that is your requirement the staff needs to follow it.

Things to consider are the laundering, will they need to be replaced every time they come back from break... etc

I would think because it is covering the mouth it may get soiled from breathing and you would need to replace frequently.

Be sure to include all of these points with your risk assessments.

Good luck

I am not sure what products you are producing but, we are a bakery and my employees would never wear the hood in the summer months when it gets to be 80-90 degrees inside the facility. The two employees you have that were seen not wearing their hair nets properly, where was their supervisor/managers that did not see them and/or did see them and allowed them to get away with wearing them improperly? To me it sounds like you need to put more emphasis on the supervisors/managers to do their jobs and check their employees at the beginning of the shift and after every time they left the production floor to make sure they are wearing all of their PPE properly.

Good luck if you do make the change.

You might look into a different type of hairnet.  aburnet has good ones, and they actually have supporting articles for them.  There might be a local company that makes similar ones in Canada or that can supply them for you.
