Personal Items in the production area

Alright,

 

Once again I am back to ask of those professionals on this forum for their opinion and understanding on personal items on the production floor.

Certain positions will need to transfer a "bundle" of materials (Records, calculator, other work materials). 

If those items are all carried in a back-pack and there is nothing else in the back-pack is that back-pack a personal item?

 

A jacket is obviously a personal item. My point is if the back-pack / or other enveloping device is full of solely work materials it would no longer be considered personal but maybe i am missing something.

 

Does it have to be uniformly used by all parties? Company supplied? 

 

What is everybody's experience with this ?

My instinct would be that if they are carrying company supplied items, they should be using a company supplied carrying device. The risk here being if the "backpack" is a personal item that they bring to and from home it could potentially bring in hazards (cookie crumbs, foreign material, etc.) The other risk being they might take work items home with them by mistake which would also put those items at risk of becoming lost or tampered with. 

 

How far are they traveling with this "bundle"? Can you supply some tote bags for them to use?

In the end I think you are right. Right from the substance of your argument, and also you can never say enough about uniformity in the workplace. A green back-pack here and a hot pink one over there is only going to attract unwanted conversation and attention from clients and auditors alike.

What does everyone else think?

Look into maybe a clipboard that has a storage compartment. Ive used to carry one around and it would have me metal detector wands, calculator, flashlight, pens, papers, etc. If thats not something wanted, then maybe look into a company bag, like a tote bag (one like ikea has) but obviously made for the company and make it a rule that it cant go home. I also used to have a utility belt that held a lot of things but it wouldnt be able to hold large amounts of paper, just a small note book. I had a small calculator and pens and a small thermometer. I've seen movable storage desks that are a small metal podium that has a lot of compartments and can go in different areas that are needed and can be locked! It also would be hard to take home so no worries there. 

 

It all depends on your facility and what you are willing to buy or allow the team to use. Risk assessments can help determine all of the risks to for all of them.

Uae an all in one clipboard with a tray that snaps in place - can put the papers in it and have a calculator built into the part.

If you can't fit all supplies into the clipboards others have mentioned above I'd go with a clear zippered container issued by the company and tag it with persons names or if a specific location where it may be used..  This does a couple things:

 

1. Easy to see if it is dirty and needs cleaning.

2. Easy to spot any contraband...back packs are pretty notorious for contraband (GMP contraband).

3. If employee damages container it is relatively easy to see.

4. Naming or labeling the containers hold persons accountable and no swapping can take place.

 

If supplied by company have employees come to you if they need replacement.

I would assume you are using backpacks or something similar for a reason.

 

If they cannot be eliminated you could develop some standard and regular inspection/verification to ensure and demonstrate that they are not becoming personal storage locations.

 

Uniformity definitely helps with image, as well as food defense as it allows to immediately identify a personal backpack vs. work backpack.
