Backup manufacturing plants / contingency plans

Wow...this is the first I have heard it to this extent.  What they are asking of you is to have your backup producer of your products, whether that is a second plant under your company, or another plant you have licensed to produce the product, to make a production run every 6 months and send a case from that production run to your customer for evaluation.

I get why they ask this, but it really is asking a lot depending on how your company is setup with the backup manufacturing plans for your products.

A lot of companies do not have multiple sites and would have to find a "frienemeny" to make nice with to backup their production in case they cannot produce.

is it like emergency/crisis management procedure, relating to how I will protect products in case of an incident/crisis ?

or

it means, If I can't produce their (customer's) product for some reason, then What I will do to have their product consistently produced, whether in another site or other sister/friend company?

From what you posted I cannot tell you what they are implying.  I only see what may be there standard for backup/contingency plans for production.  You will have to reach out to your customer to get further clarification.  I do know from experience, certain customers want their suppliers to have contingency plans if they cannot produce their product.  However, I have never seen the requirement to run that product at the contingency production site every 6 months and submit samples to the customer.

The backup/contingency plan is what your company will do if you cannot produce their product.  If your company has multiple sites capable of producing the product then your backup/contingency plan is another product site under your company.  However, not all companies have this option so your top person that deals with that customer needs to inquire further.  The customer may have another site they can suggest to produce the product.  If they don't then you will have to consult with the top people at your company to find a site that is willing to produce the product if your facility cannot produce it.

Sorry, I spelled "frienemy" incorrectly before.  I don't usually write that term, but rather express it verbally.  A frienemey is slang; an example would be a company that is normally a competitor, but your company is on relatively "friendly" business terms with them.

Back-up Manufacturing:  do you have another plant that has similar manufacturing capabilities or a third party co-manufacturer?

Contingency plans (business recovery):  what would you do if you lost power, had a national disaster, employee strike, terrorist activity, loss of a supplier, etc.
