I am the SQF Practitioner and Production manager for a small manufacturer of food preservatives in powder form. In preparing for SQF Edition 9 - we are exploring our options for the backup SQF Practitioner. The owner of the business wants to appoint himself as the backup SQF Practitioner (to save money). Is there not a conflict of interest here?  Specifically with the Food Fraud Assessment and Management Commitment sections? Has this been discussed before?

Remember, you just need to follow the code, no more no less

Whether or not there is a conflict is irrelevant in this application. In all actually he will never have to make a decision in your absence (unless your facility is perpetually out of control) so this is just a code requirement. Don't invest too much time or energy in this one

Please stop referring to me as Sir/sirs

that's fine, the owner can be the backup.

full understanding of the sqf code and how it relates to your operation
haccp certified, etc.

there is no conflict of interest - this is not documentation creation, but basically stepping in when the primary is not available, such as in a surprize sqf audit or when the primary is out of office for extended period.

Agreed with the above two responses.

This is SQF - there is A LOT OF MONEY invested in this, so there should always be an appreciation of the owners wanting to save money, but of course, WITHIN REASON!

As long as the owner understands your food safety plan, your SQF certification, the SQF standard, has HACCP certification, is going to step up when you are absent from the role... then all good.
