Broken gauges on very old equipment

Hi Everyone,

 

We have some very old equipment and some of the gauges are missing their glass lenses.

 

Since these were gone long before now, must I replace them or can I make a notation that they never had glass in the first place for my glass audit?  What would be the SQF Packaging expectation?

All of the gauges are missing the glass lens.  All but one gauge still have their indicator needles intact.

Do you have a glass and plastics log which you can note that they were 'removed' to cover yourself maybe with engineering tag on the broken gauges with needle problems. But to be honest this is a messy situation to put yourself in by doing so. Id ask myself these questions:-

 

- If they are broken can you not just remove them or replace them? Gauges are not that expensive.

 

- If you dont use the equipment can you not just get rid or store off site?

 

- Are they critical to what you are doing? Yes - Replace / No - Remove

 

You dont want an auditor to open a can of worms when he sees a broken gauge and starts asking leading questions. They will start looking in detail at your kit which might open up some more issues. Also they may start asking about routene maintainance schedules and proof of that............ 

 

Dont give an auditor ammo to give you a non-conformance!

Replace them. As both a former SQF Auditor and now an SQF Consultant I can see a non conformance on the horizon for you if they are not in good condition with protective shield in place.
