Is it ok to use Sticky Traps?
I have a question about sticky boards. I don’t see anything in the SQF code that speaks against these.
11.2.7.4 states: Electric insect control devices, pheromone or other traps and baits shall be located so as not to present a contamination risk to the product, packaging, containers or processing equipment.
So, in reading that, it seems to be acceptable to use sticky boards…as long as they do not present a risk to our product, packaging etc., they’re ok? Or is this something that is taboo in the industry? I just need to find more information on the acceptability of this. Hope you guys can help! Thanks!
I think the hazard here is a rodent may become partially stuck and drag that glue board somewhere you don't want it and perish there. We use plenty of glue boards but they're enclosed inside a metal box with openings at either side so the board stays put in mapped location.

On top of the glue board for rodents, it is also recommended that glue boards to is to be used for insect light traps instead of the conventional electric type as this may cause foreign material in the product stream depending on the location of installation.
In terms of rodent control, glue board is the most logical. Using rodenticides is not allowed inside processing areas. IF you use mechanical trap, the bait you will use may introduce allergen.
Pheromone traps also uses "glue" in in boards or cartons.
Using of such, provided you manage the "glue boards" have low to neglible risks that it will contaminate your food or packaging.

I am assuming you are referring to insect control only?.... sticky boards are more widely used in UK behind the tubes due to the risk of the "zapper" insectocutor spreading the insect guts into foods (some retailer standards even state the distance these devices should be located above open product) also it is good to retain the insects because you can then trend the finds & take action where appropriate.
For rodent sticky boards BPCA (British pest control association) mandate the frequency of checking as 12hours as it considered inhumane to allow rodents to remain on these boards for extended periods of time.

However UK retailers (who essentially control food manufacturers who supply them) are very averse to rodent sticky boards & are campaigning for them to be banned - they are already outlawed in New Zealand.

I am not aware of standards for other regions so it is worth checking - especially if you supply global customers as they may have specific requirements.
Sticky boards are not recommended in Canada either. Mechanical Tin Cats are used instead.
There is a lot of push back on sticky pads as they are inhumane as the critter will struggle for a long time to get free prior to, well you know what happens next

we use sticky foil in the insect light traps to count the level over time.
If we talk about vertebrates I think first of all it is a legal quesion. In Germany it is forbidden by law to use sticky boards e.g. for rodents. Years ago I have had a long discussion with an auditor from UK.

Sticky tape is used for insects, sticky boards are used for mice/rodents.
I know of nothing that says you can't use these, but many companies have stopped using them as they are extremely inhuman.

In addition to what has been said above, I would like to add, that it's good to work toward the prevention of pests. In other words, to keep them outside your company and to create the hygienic conditions avoiding the development of certain pests inside your company.
