I was approached by our maintenance supervisor about the use of rawhide hammers. They use a brass/copper hammers currently. The purpose of this is use a hammer to help remove a screen from our lines. The brass/copper hammers cause slight damage to the screens, the screens then have to be repaired at that point. The maintenance supervisors looked into rawhide hammers, these are tightly wound and dipped in a resin to harden the raw hide.  We used these hammers in the past, before SQF was a thing. The other issue is they are wooden handled as well. Is there anyone out there that uses these hammers? Have you ever been questioned by an auditor about them?

I've never had an auditor ask to see maintenance tools, but you can bet they'd spot a wooden handle if it was on the floor during the walkthrough

 

From the sounds of things, I's day they need to switch to a softer deadblow style mallet that won't cause damage
