Repackaging of Food Grade product

I have a convoluted situation, as if no else does.  :rofl2: We are looking into repackaging a GRAS, low risk product, from 50# bags to smaller containers for resale (food grade).  Our current SQF certification is for FSC 19 & FSC 33, but will be adding FSC 26 with our next audit due to bringing in products we will be simply storing and distributing from other manufacturers.   From what I've gathered, we will need to add FSC 25 for repackaging of product not manufactured on site.  Here's where it gets interesting:

 

1.  The product would not have our company name on it, but our sister company, who does not have any type of food grade certification, but is housed in the same building as our food grade plant.  We are looking into modifying a part of the plant to reduce cross-contamination, etc. Do we need to add the sister company to our scope/documentation or have a separate cert with their name?

 

2.  If we wanted to do a test run to see how the market will respond to the product, we will need a haccp plan, documentation, label requirements, etc. before doing so, correct?  (verification of what I think we have to do).

Hi Jill, we had a client with a similar situation - a company within a company and at the time (this is going back 15 years now) it was required that the sister company get a separate certification - separate everything, documentation system, etc. - however given that times change I would suggest that first you inquire if you can simply add the sister company to the scope or if you need to go multi-unit - I am assuming the sister company is under the same ownership- if not, it would appear that you'd need to go with a separate certification, but I would still attempt for the simple addition route and then multi before having to go full tilt to a separate certification.

 

In answer to #2, yes you are correct. confirmed.

1- Because they are co-located in the same building it is at least possible, but will likely depend on the people involved.  If the same people are responsible for food safety and quality programs and oversight, you can probably get them included under one certification.  If however a separate team of people are running the safety and quality programs for the second company, it will more likely need to be a separate certification.  Sort out who is going to be responsible for what, and talk to your CB.
