Do We Need Metal Detection for BRC If Our Risk is Low?

Hi All 

We currently do not have metal detectors, we are SALSA approved and as far as I am aware it has never been an issue based on our process. 

 

It's predominantly hand mixed but in the last year have purchased a large  paddle mixer that I think makes 50 kg plus. 

 

We do not use knives but do use scissors and metal spoons, of which are not likely to damage and cause contamination which is what our HACCP is based on and have checks in place. We have a history of virtually no metal complaints or finds. We sell to wholesalers, cafes & Schools.

 

So my question is would we face issues when we do go for BRC if we do not have MD in place?

BRC is all about Risk assessment.  Show the risk of metal contamination to be low and the type (shape/size) of potential contamination is not a food safety risk.  You should have other programs in place to show that the paddle blender is working properly (not scraping or rubber on metal, paddles/blades are not damaged) such as audible visual checks, maintenance PMs and pre-op checks.

Hi Laura,

 

You need to risk assess whether metal detection is required or not. Have you got a copy of the BRC v9 standard?

 

4.10.3.1 - Metal detection equipment shall be in place unless risk assessment demonstrates that this does not improve food safety. Where metal detectors are not used, justification shall be documented. The absence of metal detection would only normally be based on the use of an alternative, more effective method of protection (e.g. use of X-ray, fine sieves or filtration of products).

 

If you're supplying into schools that's a vulnerable user group and I would certainly insist on product being metal detected if it's classed as RTE.
