Japan is a densely populated country, with 124 million inhabitants in an area of 377,000 square kilometers.
The cultivated land area accounts for only 12% of the total.
Japan needs to import large quantities of food, almost 100% of its grains and half of its pork.
Its main trading partners are the USA, China, Korea, and Australia.
Japan has an effective imported food control system established by the Ministry of HLW, which is managed through an annual Imported Food Monitoring and Guidance Plan.
In 2024, Japan rejected 700 consignments of food, mainly due to the presence of pesticide residues and excessive or unauthorized amounts of food additives.
