My company is planning to install PPE vending machines for latex gloves. Has anyone had any issues with this or previous experience?

Ours is fairly new, but I think it helps some of the higher priced items from walking away.

There is no charge, you swipe your badge so we know where items are going. We have batteries, clipboard, boots, etc in ours.  Line leads and above can assess it. It has small maintenace parts too, hoses, clamps, etc.

 

Keeps track of inventory.

They used this in the main location of the previous company I worked for. The safety director loved it and was pretty gung ho about it, everyone else was not impressed. 

Pros:

• Makes inventory easier, although a physical will still need to be done every so often (double drops and 0 drops)
• Shows exactly who is getting repeat items that should be lasting (4 safety glasses and jersey gloves a week? They aren't disposable..)
• Free's up time for the safety person who previously had to do the handing out/tracking task

Cons:

• Frequent jams, or issues with the machine. Especially troublesome on some of the bulkier items
• Will need to be restocked
• Can put you in a 'employees working without PPE' situation if the stock is out or the machine is down, so you might still need an 'emergency' stash available which negates quite a few of the pros.

I've never heard of such a thing!   Lol, that's crazy.   Of course I work at a smaller place, but do you mean it just tracks who takes what?   They don't have to PAY for stuff do they?!?!?! Lol....Stupid question I know, but again, never heard of a ppe vending machine...

No payment. I just use my door access card to activate it, scroll through items (or search) push the button. The clear door pops open and you are on the honor system to take what you state you are taking.

I've only ever seen them for maintenance parts.  Crazy to use them for gloves.  Unless you mean H&S gloves.

In the States, some people tend to be pack rats. Each line lead. QA or maintenance wtill set aside a box of gloves as a stash to use 'in case of emergency'. Then, you end up with10 boxes, all over the plant, half full of gloves and of dubious cleanliness. I have no problem with a lead talking 3 boxes of gloves each in 3 different sizes for 3 different locations on the line, but some people will take them and leave them in their locker.

Lord. I know it is because it is 6:00am on a Sunday morning, and I am at work, but you critictize the way everyone does things.

 

There is no 1 best method (yours) for each facility or situation. This is working for us right now. Someone asked opinions on vending machines. I don't have a bad opinion of them right now---that might change.

 

1. Yes, it is a long way to restock. We don't want every single person wandering around looking for gloves. The break room, which is our starting point, is crowded enough with bump caps racks, lunch bags racks, microwaves, vending machines, notices, TV with more notices, photo timeclocks, hairnets, etc.

2. We are rarely out of gloves...But they need frequent replacement. They are demanded by Costco and our corporate and there is no changing that as of now.

3. We don't have someone dedicated to replenish every sundry item, we have given that responsibility to the area lead.

4. Glove holders are in place.

 

Theft and willful destruction does seem to be an issue. CCTV is not as common here as in UK, and even so, it is easier to prevent the theft than pay someone to watch surveillance.

 

We use nitrile since latex seems to be causing allergies, but I let that slide, since it wasn't germane to the question.

I was merely asking if you'd asked the team why the problem existed as so often in RCA people miss some steps then put in a solution which doesn't solve the problem longer term.

Sorry about your excessive working hours but I'm not going to deny that hurt quite a lot.  I realise I can be somewhat intransigent at times and it's not always helpful to me or others but this has played on my mind.

 

Wish you well, hope you're not going to be working crazy hours for long and great it's working for you.  Sorry if my comments here or previously have caused offence.  They are only ever intended to try and help.  It can be easy behind a screen to forget that tone is lost, things written in jest may not be interpreted the way they're intended and that there is a real person behind the keyboard.
