Hi Jo
At its simplest, it is a case of recording the weight of the packaging used to deliver your product. For our site this is typically paper/cardboard/wood/plastic, but can be other materials, for example glass. We also record the weights for the packaging associated with our raw materials.
The actual rules can be quite complex, which is why we rely on our compliance scheme provider to calculate our obligation and who assisted in setting up our recording processes.
The reporting is done via a spreadsheet, which contains assumptions for each pallet of materials we sell. It will calculate the weight of wood (pallet), cardboard (cores & pads), paper (labels) and plastic (spin wrap & strapping) based on the pallets size, number of reels on pallet and the width of the reels.
There is a summary of the obligations on the following gov.uk web page that might be worth reading: https://www.gov.uk/g...esponsibilities.
Also, some of our customers expect us to calculate their packaging weights as well.
Hope that is of help.
Andrew
