Speaker Bio:
Janine Curll is a food labelling regulatory specialist and PhD (law) Candidate at Monash University, Australia researching the Australian food regulatory system and food fraud. In 2014 she founded Food Labelling Matters (www.foodlabellingmatters.com) - a virtual space for the in depth discussion of all matters relating to food labelling and authenticity; and, is the director of Food Labels Online (www.foodlabels.com.au), a uniquely online and boutique food labelling and claims compliance service. For many years Janine was an Enforcement Officer for the NSW Food Authority, specialising in enforcing the labelling provisions of the Food Standards Code. She prosecuted some of the Authority's most significant cases of food fraud, food borne illness and adulterated food cases, including the sale of food adulterated with pharmaceuticals (sibutramine), misleading conduct in the sale of meats falsely described as to their animal welfare and production methods, sale of poisonous Yellow Oleander as a slimming food labelled candlenut and called 'The Latin Seed', as well as the large 2009 Listeria monocytogenes multi-jurisdictional outbreak following the sale of contaminated chicken wraps on Virgin Blue airlines causing stillbirths and significant injury over a 6 month timeframe. In this role Janine developed a passion for truth in labelling and regulatory study. Janine has a Bachelor of Science (Microbiology) from the University of New South Wales and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Technology, Sydney.
