Someone has advised me to go for the ISO 27001 accreditation as I hold a lot of private client data. What are other people's views on this?

Same as Simon, me neither. But if I want to seek an introduction to various ISO series, I always like to see this link:

There are ISO 27001 and 27002 introduction on that link. I dunno the different, but probably it may gives help on you.
