[Nampak Cartons Netherlands]

Hi colleages in food bussiness,

We've been audited by the AIB and they recommended us to document a Food Defence Program.
Can anyone help me on this topic as we in the Netherlands are not very familiair with Food Defence?

Any help would be very appreciated.

Did the AIB auditor give you an NC against any particular clause, if so what does it say in the AIB Standard.

Hi Nampak,

Food defense is a basic plan showing that how your facility will prevent any intentional contamination of food. It can be person coming in the form of contractor, any visitior gettting into the facilty from any open door. You need to answer some basic question like are you putting seals on outbound trucks and cheking seals of inbound truck, none of the visitor is roaming around alone etc. If you search in google you will find some basic structure of food defense plan and you will need to just plugin the informatoin of you plant. That whole document will provide you what things are important and you will need to address them. Please provide me your mail address and i will mail you one small presentation for food defense. I remember that i saw such kind of blank food defense form on USDA site. I will try to search and keep you posted. But basically you will need to secure water supply, air makup unit, lock outside storage trailer, swipe entry door so only employees can enter, and some other stuff. Also you will need to address Vulnerabilities of you food defense plan.

Food defense is not unknown in the Netherlands. It surely is part of the BRC food requirements and a voluntary part of the IFS food requirements. Also some retailer standards do include these requirements.
It is true, that we think to easy about it. However this is changing. Especially after the poisening of Mona deserts some years ago. (can you remember it? some guy was putting poison in mona deserts with a needle. After that there was also a small poisening issue with Albert Heijn, even though I can not remember wat it was anymore) (and can not find anything about these 2 cases on IT)
Dave is right. You should find where and how some one can add something in your ingredients, your process or your finished products that can harm the consumers of the products that will be packed in your products. You have to control these contamination routes.

This is the policy we use and AIB finds it adequate. Specific references to Company and phone numbers have been removed.
General measures are in the program. Specific measures taken to provide Food Defense would be outside the scope of the Program and should not be included as they would compromise the Program if they were to be spelled out.
Include enough detail in your program without being too detailed, if you get my meaning.

It's clause 5.17.2.1 in the AIB standard "non food contact packaging manufacturing facilities".
But I received a lot of information from our fellow forum colleages, so I am able to draw up such a document.

Thanks for your information, we are a company who produce carton packaging for the food industry and we have the BRC-IoP certification which does not say anything about Food Defence. But with every reply I think I have enough informatio to go ahead.

Hi Claudia,
I'm a newbioe here myself, but maybe I can help you a little with yoru question. Food Defense which begun mainly after the 9-11 bombing is very similar to your Food Safety Program but instead of addressing accidental tainting of products, it focuses on intentional tampering. So you pretty much follow your Food Safety program, i.e. from receiving all the way throught he process to when you transport it to the customer only thing is you look at ways the product can be tampered with along the chain. Now I am not in any way recommending or advertising for AIB, but I did take their Food Defense Program and found it very helpful. I am sure you can go on-line and find a good Food Defense Training Program and even consultants to help you set up the program. One place you may try is the FDA website, they have a program called CARVER+SHOCK that may be beneficial.
