We take samples from our incoming raw materials. Our SQF Auditor suggested rather than using tape (He was not impressed) he had seen a company that used a threaded bung into the paper sack that had a cap on it. The bung, of course, is removed and reused when the material is needed for a mix. Has anyone had any experience with these devices, or tell me where I might find them?

Many Thanks!

Hi Dan,

We often take samples from our paper sacks although I have never come across these threaded bungs (I would be very interested to see them though if another member has any further information). It strikes me that these would be most useful for bags that may need repeated samples taken from them over a period of time.

We sample from our sacks using a stainless steel sampling spike and then we cover the hole with special ultra-adhesive metal-detectable labels which work fantastically (they stick firm even with a layer of powder dust on the sack). We get ours from a company who specialise in sampling equipment, I'm sure a quick Google search will help you find similar companies.

Regards,

Matt

Matt -

Can you tell me the name or provide a web link for the company supplying your labels? I realize it is probably in the EU, but at least I could give a better description to US suppliers when I try to track them down here.

Dan -
I like Matt's idea better than what I do currently, but currently, I use tape to seal the hole and then place one of our QA Inspected stickers across the tape, sign & date it. I have never heard of the bung contraption for paper product bags...
