Hi,
How would you in simple terms describe the diference between calibration and verification of equipment?

A calibration indicates the measurement error of the equipment and compensates for that error by applying a correction.
A verification indicates that the measurement error of the equipment is smaller than a maximum permissible error.
The measurement is made ideally with a NIST or NIST traceable standard.

Adding some more points with osp:
1- Calibration is identifying, and adjusting where possible, the measurement errors of a measuring device.
2- Verification, in addition to activity mentioned by osp, is also
(a) to verify that measurement errors are well communicated to concerned and
(b) to verity whether error is permissible at point of application and
© to verify the frequency of re-calibration is justifiable with regard to measurement error.
(d) to randomly verify the actual measurements take account of identified error.
Regards.
