So this is like a completely newbie question here, but as a packaging manufacturer (we make foam meat trays) I only need to be looking at the "BRC/IOP Global Standard for Packaging & Packaging Materials Issue 4" in guidance for the audit correct? Or do I also need to look at the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety Issue 6? Sorry for being such a new guy, but a company has just required that we become gfsi certified. Thanks for the help guys!

Have you decided to do BRC or is your customer requiring it?  BRC is not the only scheme that covers packaging.  SQF  covers it as well.  I would have to double check the other schemes to see if they cover packaging.

The company is not requiring BRC but my company is wanting to use BRC

First off no apologies needed for being new....we've all been new at some point and we can take on new things.  Even the most experienced can keep learning.  While BRC will cover GFSI and good manufacturing you still are going to need to follow FDA  and if your selling to Europe the EU guidelines.  Testing for packaging can be confusing especially at first.  A good lab will do wonders, but that is the tricky part.  I found even some of the most recognized labs not very helpful or knowledgeable.  I finally got to a recognized lab with a good rep and it all became much easier.

I don't use BRC, so I don't know if you should use standard 4 or standard 6, but I do know that when I read "foam meat trays" I thought immediately of these, which don't require any food safety standard at all to produce, but have complex nutrition panel/labeling requirements -

yeah we make those! but yes the BRC is a requirement of the purchaser rather than a requirement of the industry, thanks!

Thank you! Thats what I was thinking, but just double checking. Do you use the packaging standard at all or just have knowledge? Hopefully I can pick your brain in the future!

It wouldn't be a bad thing at all but you will need to 'cough up' for another standard!
