Hello,

In BRC Issue 6 the position statement for section 4.10.3 Metal Detection allowed the use of stop belt metal detection systems that did not have an automatic reject of the product along as other controls were in place. However, in Issue 7, I  do not see this allowance. Instead, in point 4.10.3.2, it says that stop belt systems are only allowed when the product cannot be automatically ejected for example large packs.

We do not have an automatic ejection system. Mostly we pass whole packs of product passing under the detector (minimum 300 grams) which are to large for an air reject system. Sometimes we pass individually-wrapped product but this is less often. However, we do pass each product pack one-at-a-time and the belt stops immediately so we know exactly which pack has triggered the alarm.

Is this adequate for BRC 7?

Thanks,

Debbie

From the Interpretation Guidance:

The standard permits the use of belt stop mechanisms provided there are controls in place to prevent product from being inadvertently placed back on the line.

For belt stop style systems, this will typically include the use of a container into which rejected product is placed and secured so that only authorized staff can remove the product.

In addition:

The removal of affected product should be restricted to trained authorized staff.

Rejected product could be marked, destroyed or have labels removed to reduce the risk of it getting back into the product flow.

Line restart should be restricted to designated personnel who must verify the location of the "rejected" product prior to restart.

Records should be maintained to document each belt stop in response to detection of metal in product.
