Wasn't exactly sure where to pose this question, so figured I would ask here.

 

We have a company policy that prohibits anyone under the age of 18 from entering the manufacturing area of the facility, however, we have another issue we need/want to address and that is emplpoyee children being in the office areas.

 

Does anyone have a policy concerning employees that are in the office areas with their children present that they can share?  

 

We are trying to figure out how to word it from a safety standpoint, being as the office areas are connected to lab areas and manufacturing employees frequently walk through these areas with products/ingredients that could cause risks if spilled on skin inadvertently, etc.

When I was the Safety Officer of a research laboratory, which had hazardous materials in the work areas, we only allowed children to be in the office areas, and their parents had to be with them at all times, supervising them.  They also could not be brought in if they were ill.

 

Having children in the workplace is an extreme safety hazard, and a liability.  It's worse for a food manufacturer, since children are a reservoir for diseases.

 

We put this into our general safe work practices policy.

At our facility we do not allow minors into our facility even in our office areas, without special training and clearance. Having a minor on the site of production is a huge safety liability and could also mean that if they would be ill or become ill. This could potentially contaminate product and cause a recall or worse.

Your insurance company may be able to provide you some guidance on this also.
