Hi ganderson,

Some context might assist. Waste by-product ?

Check with the USDA ?

No waste product - we have a unique bakery inclusion that a pet food manufacturer wants to use.

The challenge at this point is the incorporation of a vitamin enrichment to added to our base formula and this enrichment is made by a company specializing in animal feed enrichments.

The FDA / CFR glosses over the use of common production lines for animal and human food. Just wondering if anyone has faced similar challenges and what types of solutions were implemented.

Are they both "human grade" products and you simply process one for a animal food facility, you're not actually manufacturing a finished pet food correct?

Or are you saying an enrichment ingredient you use in human food comes from an animal food production facility?

We produce human food and animal food ingredients at our facility.  We are FAMI-QS and FSSC 22000 certified.  All of our processes, regardless of the type of product, meet these standards.

I think you would need a robust hazard analysis of the vitamin mix for pet food use and how you will prevent cross contamination with human food products.

Not sure I can offer assistance but I did work in a facility that we produced a beef product for human consumption (USDA) one day and a different recipe for dog treats a different day (FDA).  We could not do both on the same day, and of course required verified and validated cleaning procedures.  Can my time at that facility help??

Hi,

I know such kind of requests for bakery wares. As long as the products are manufactured from food grade materials and you avoid contamination this should not be a problem - in principle.

And in Germany you have to announce to the authority that your comany is a feed producer, even if you are a contract manufacturer to a pet food company.

The name of the German food law "Lebensmittel- und Futtermittelgesetzbuch" -  "German Foodstuff and Animal Feed Code" demonstrates already the equivalence of high requirements for both (valid for animals which lateron become food, not pet food).

But: If you are a manufacturer of well known branded products you should think of the possible reactions of your customers when they learn that you manufacture pet food.
