Hello all,

We are a spice manufacturing facility and i have been researching 2.8.1 and the allergen management program. We only ship in the united states. We only carry gluten in the form of wheat. We already recognize and label wheat in our allergen program. I am thinking about incorporating gluten into my wheat category to say (Allergen 1: Wheat [gluten])  however i would still recognize just gluten as an allergen in our program by itself as well to recognize the risk of gluten that is not derived from  wheat even though we do not carry any of these items.. Just like we recognize and consider Peanuts even though we do not package or carry peanuts in our facility. Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

hi there,

perhaps you could label as "cereals containing gluten"?

2.8.1 says where applicable in which if this is just for the US then it would be not applicable since the US doesn't recognize gluten as a separate allergen.

As long as you identify wheat, you should be fine.

As for recognizing other allergens especially for allergens not found in your facility, this would come in the form of your supplier verification.  To make sure there's not risk of cross contact with your suppliers.

KfromIA while the US doesn't consider it an allergen SQF does. While the code may imply that "where applicable" would be relevant to regulation, they really meant "where applicable" as in where it needs to be controlled in your facility. In the guidance they specifically state:

" Irrespective of its inclusion in regulations, gluten must be included in the site’s allergen program"
