Hi all,

Looking for a little guidance.

A client is looking at sites and one has a production facility with existing toilets around the internal perimeter of the production area.  The toilets open directly into walkways in production.  

My understanding is that no toilets should open directly into production but they wondered if we added another door in between the "production area" door and the toilet and ensured one was closed before the other opened, would that satisfy the requirement?  They were also considering building waist height partitions along each walkway.

That would work - provided, that there will be hand wash stations installed at the entrances of the production areas.

How will you insure the one door will remain closed when the other is opened?

Great questions and ones I don't know the answer to as it is a theoretical move at present but I can certainly ask the questions re airflow and where it is venting to.  If they go down this route I think they would install whatever was needed to make it work in terms of ventillation but I'm fairly in the dark at the moment.  My concern was predominantly with 6.3.6 and the rules around opening "directly into production" but I absolutely agree that the airflow and venting would be a key consideration.    Thank you for taking the time to respond.

You may want to check the UK regulatory requirements as well-----in Canada (as per building code as well as FS regs) toilet areas MUST vent directly outside

 

Given the science about bacteria spread from toilets without lids when flushed---err on the side of caution on this one
