[SQF beginner]

Hello Professionals!

Being a new QA manager I am learning as quick as possible as far as regulations go... some questions elude me however, hoping i can find some answers here...

 

We are a Grade A Dairy plant, and is developing a system which recovers products through the lines into a silo designated for animal food.

 

1. Do I need a PCQI certificate for Animal Food because of this system?

 

2. Is there any restrictions in holding time before we have to empty the silo? can someone refer to a section in the PMO? (probably will be answered in 1. , but wanted to know ahead just in case).

I'd read up on regulations and such in terms of items going to animal feed.  They are tighter than what most people think.  And from what I understand there may be slight differences state to state as well as the feed supplier you would be selling it too?  Sorry not very much knowledge in this area.  Worked at one plant we did this in and I was pleasantly surprised at how much tighter the rules were for animal feed than most people would think.  Hopefully someone else can help out.

If you are only diverting "waste" materials to another entity who will manufacture the animal food, then you just need to make sure the materials are handled in a sanitary manner and are traceable.  If you are manufacturing the animal feed or a component of the feed, then you will need to be PCQI trained for animal food/feed. I haven't dealt with dairy manufacturing (but in seafood we sell a lot of scrap material to animal feed suppliers), so I can't answer your PMO questions.

1.   It would be a good idea to take the animal feed QI course.   It is very similar to the human food course.  there are some differences.   

2.  I also could not find the storage time for pasteurized waste.   

3.  you will most likely need to get a feed license.   if exporting to other states, you may need a license for that state as well.    they may also be able to help with #2.
