Hi All,

I was wondering if you guys know , what the regulations look like in China, we are ordering the primary packaging from China , and the packaging its shipped to USA , is there any regulation regarding that? Does the manufacturing place in china has to have some kind of certifcaiton?

As far as I know, a packaging manufacturer should have IMS certification. We're preparing to sell our products to US market - and one of the requirements was to have our primary packaging to be IMS-certified.

you need to be very cautious and ensure you do all the due diligence you can on food contact packaging from China

Ask for the standard documents you would ask for of any other packaging supplier.  Make sure they can provide you with a regulatory statement showing adherence to whichever guidelines you need for the country of your facility.  IU would personally want them GFSI certified.  Also, I would ask for documentation on chemical migration.  Wouldn't hurt to get a sample roll first and maybe do some trialing and testing yourself before committing to making a substantial purchase.

Shouldn't they adhere to the regulations that apply to the customer rather than the manufacturer?

Yes, that is what I meant by the phrase "Make sure they can provide you with a regulatory statement showing adherence to whichever guidelines you need for the country of your facility.  I meant it as natalia90's facility as the customer.  My apologies if it didn't sound that way.

Some foreign suppliers are going to be utterly unaware of your local legislation. In fact, I'm pretty sure some of them will sign any statement you send them, just to finish dealing with their mailbox.

I would insist that the supplier in question be GFSI certified and also ask for:

1) a product specification that lists all the properties of the packaging (size, color, weight, material, etc)

2) analytical reports for migration

3) a statement that the packaging conforms to the legislation of all the countries were you plan to use and sell the packaging.

If you run into trouble obtaining these documents, it's probably not the right supplier to use.
